The Definitive Collection traces Michael Jackson's earliest recorded output on two clearly delineated sides: his run of hits as the Jackson5's youngest member, "I Want You Back," "ABC" and "I'll Be There," and his parallel solo singles for Motown, including "Got To Be There," "Rockin' Robin" and "Ben." The latter became Jackson's first solo number one in 1972, written for the horror film of the same name and originally offered to Donny Osmond before Jackson recorded it instead. Together, the two sides capture the period before Off the Wall reshaped his career, when Jackson was already carrying two simultaneous recording identities at once.
