For a moment, Chance The Rapper was the internet's favourite AWAL (artist without a label), the Chicago-born man best known for making a proud point about being an unsigned rapper, before it was cool to be so. Coloring Book appeared in 2016 after Chance returned to his home city after his early touring years, became a father, and recommitted to his faith; that convergence of events can be heard thematically in this single 14-track smorgasbord of chaotic, gospel-twisted, feelgood hip-hop, packed with drastic autotune, huge (some would reasonably say overmixed) vocal backings, and audacious features from Lil Wayne to the Chicago Children's Choir.
